The most common cause of a TBI are falls, which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), accounted for nearly one in every two (47 percent) TBI emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in the U.S. in 2013. Older adults are particularly susceptible to falls, and in 2013 they were the leading cause of death for individuals over age 65. Being struck either by or against an object was the second most prevalent cause of TBIs that year followed by车祸。
TBIS的不幸崛起
According to the CDC, the total combined rates for TBI-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths increased from 2001 to 2010 despite dipping a bit in 2006 and 2007. In fact, this division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports the number of TBI-related emergency department visits surged 47 percent over the six-year span from 2007 to 2013. While these visits may have helped reduce the number of necessary hospitalizations and TBI-related death rates – these dropped 2.5 percent and 5 percent, respectively, over this period – just under 3 million TBI-related emergency departments visits, hospitalizations, and deaths still occurred in 2013. Moreover, young people are among the growing number of TBI patients: almost 330,000 children age 19 and younger suffered a TBI due to sports-related injuries and recreational accidents in 2012. In fact, the rate of TBI-related emergency department visits for young people in this age group more than doubled from 2001 to 2012.
